Iconic Learning and Transport Hub for South Auckland

Iconic Learning and Transport Hub for South Auckland

It’s not the first time we’ve seen innovative architecture merge two functions into one space, but New Zealand's MIT Manukau & Transport Interchange is one of the first to achieve this fusion with such grace. Groundbreaking in its size and scale, the design incorporates a framework of diamond brace columns, steel beams and external horizontal sun shades. Internally, a soaring six story atrium provides an open, welcoming space for students, commuters and any visitors passing through.

The distinctive community hub is the pride of Manukau City, so the developers knew it was crucial to apply protective coatings that would preserve the quality materials and finishes for many years to come. Surrounded by coastline, the structure needed to withstand a C4 corrosivity environment. Additionally, UV radiation and high pressure cleaning could dull the finish over time.

Graham Gates, Business Development executive for Dulux PC in Auckland contributed his expertise to the project with a recommendation for the Dulux PUR4 system. Starting with a base of Zincanode 402 for zinc-rich cathodic protection, the steel was then coated with Duremax GPE, a two pack high performance epoxy. Weathermax HBR, a two pack polyurethane, provided a stunning topcoat with high saturation and long lasting durability.

The result? Dramatic black steel in the atrium contrasting elegantly with warm timber tones and distinctive white diamonds on the exterior making the building instantly recognisable.

MIT Manukau & Transport Interchange has received multiple architectural awards and commendations, including the 2015 New Zealand Institution of Architects Education Award. This is a credit to the talented design team at Warren and Mahoney Architects and all the hardworking project managers and tradespeople who turned the vision into reality.
