Edith Cowan University

The spectacular façade of the Joondalup campus of Edith Cowan University is eye-catching. Dramatic steel pillars splay out across the building, evoking the harsh beauty of the West Australian landscape.

Seventeen years ago, the team at Dulux Protective Coatings created a specification of Zincanode 304 and Ferreko No3 to create a long lasting, protective finish. A spray application was used for each coating on the abrasive blasted steel. Today, the finish remains in very good condition. The DFT (Dry Film Thickness) readings around the project remain consistently between 220 and 405 microns, and there have been minimal signs of coating breakdown. This represents long-term protection at its best - with only minor evidence of corrosion, maintenance has been minimal over this time period. Only five kilometres from the coastline, Edith Cowan University's Joondalup campus experiences airborne salts, atmospheric moisture, high UV radiation and temperature extremes. As planned, the façade’s inlaid timber has weathered with charm, but the high-impact finish of the steelwork has endured.
